Vegas Invasion I
Before I bought my Honda del Sol, I never noticed how many I saw on the road from day to day. I never realized the potential these cars had and the pure enjoyment that I would get from taking off the top, sliding into the form-fitting seat, rolling down the 3 windows, and hearing that engine scream as you shift through the gears. Now that I own one of these future collector's items, I've found the many joys that bring a smile to a del Sol owner's face every time he or she turns the key.
There are many people that feel the same way about their del Sol, and this is where Team Sol comes in. Friends from around the world gather on the Internet to celebrate the virtues of the del Sol. They compare modifications, offer advice, and plan meetings to show off all they have done with their Sols. These meetings are a great place to meet fellow Sol drivers and have a fun time too.
On April 27th, 2001 Team Sol Cal set out for Las Vegas, NV for the 1st Annual Vegas Meeting. People drove from hours away to participate in this awesome event. We had "Sol-Trains" from all over making their way to Sin-City. For every smile on each driver's face in a Sol, there were a hundred more from the people that watched in awe as a long line of del Sols made it's way up the highway. Once in Vegas, every stop light was an opportunity for other motorists to ask a few questions or offer an admiring comment. "What kind of cars are those?", "Nice ride!", or "How many of you are there?" were just a few that I heard myself. And answering every question filled me with pride as the light turned green and the sounds of a swarm of del Sols filled the air.
The next day, April 28th, we met at the top of Treasure Island's parking structure before leaving for Hoover Dam. One by one you could hear the echo of every Sol as it made it's way to the top level. There, we chatted for a while, took a lot of pictures and headed for the Hoover Dam. On the road again, the stares and smiles continued. This time an even bigger "Sol-Train" snaked it's way through the hot desert. After a stop for lunch, we continued up a twisty road and found the only views that people struggled to take their eyes from to watch a line of Honda del Sols motor by. In fact, as we lined up in the parking lot of the Hoover Dam, tourists turned away from the 700 foot drop to snap off a few pictures of the cars. After many pictures of our own, we split up and headed back to Vegas.
That evening we met up again and gave StreetRacing.org a chance to get a few pictures and names for their Internet article. We cruised to dinner at a local pizza parlor. After dinner most people went off on their own to explore the sights of the strip. A few managed to stay out and see sights that can only be seen at 4:30 in the morning on the Las Vegas Strip.
Sunday morning came all too early. Most people were out on the road early and were headed home with the satisfaction of knowing they had attended the first of an annual event not to be missed. It was a weekend of great fun with people who share a love of the del Sol and gained friendship along the way. Next year will be even better!
