weird clutch pedal action

Postby Sol_Stew » Tue Feb 16, 2010 2:51 pm

This just started a couple days ago.

Most of the time the clutch pedal acts completely normal.

Sometimes if I just nudge the pedal it will take off on it's own about 3/4 of the way to the floor. :confused2:

It never has gone beyond the point at which I can't get a toe under it, although I know that the pedal can do this if the hydraulics have completely failed.
I had to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders a few years ago- they could be about 5 years old now.

As soon as I lift the pedal back up again it's normal. It doesn't seem to matter what's going on with driving- how long it's been since the last pedal push (overnight, for example). Once it acts normal then I can jump all over the pedal and it stays normal, though.

I'm going to try bleeding it out and also look for leaks, but there's plenty of fluid in there.

Ok- I figured out a little more.

When I press on the pedal slowly- that's when it happens. It takes off for the floor by itself.

If I press on the pedal quickly, I feel it engage the clutch springs immediately.

I can repeat this 100%. It must be the seals on the master or the slave. Gotta look for leaks.

It sounds like a weak seal that doesn't seat against the cylinder wall unless it's under good pressure.

Yah- it's like it only leaks if I am too gentle with the pedal.

That is a little wierd. Have you ordered a new master yet?

It's a pretty easy job.

Anyway, the hydraulic lines will be opened when the motor and tranny are swapped, yes.

Yup.
slave cylinder - $20
brake fluid - $4.97
having all the tools and parts in the trunk so you can fix it when it puts you on the side of the road - priceless
